Observe
Understand the user, workflow, constraints and failure modes before choosing the technology.
Potential becomes valuable through refinement.
The name comes from foxglove. The company comes from the same idea: powerful capability only becomes useful when it is understood, controlled and refined.
Foxglove — Digitalis — had been used for centuries before its effects were studied systematically. It could help, and it could harm. The potential was obvious; the method was still to be found.
In the eighteenth century, physician and botanist William Withering documented the effects of foxglove preparations with unusual care for the time: observing what worked, what failed, how dose changed effect, and where toxicity appeared. His 1785 account helped move digitalis from an imprecise remedy towards a more controlled therapeutic intervention.
The lesson: value emerges through observation, evidence, control and iteration.
The principle
The company is built on the same idea. New technology arrives with enormous capability and very little context. We work out where it belongs, what should remain deterministic, what complexity can be removed, and what evidence is needed before a product deserves trust.
Digitalis began in healthcare, where poor product decisions carry real consequences and where safety, governance, interoperability and operational reality belong in the design from day one.
The same disciplines apply everywhere. A product should understand its environment. AI belongs where uncertainty is useful; deterministic code belongs where certainty is required. Architecture should carry only the complexity the product has earned. Delivery should create evidence as well as output.
Digitalis now applies that approach across software, AI and digital products.

Understand the user, workflow, constraints and failure modes before choosing the technology.
Find the capability that changes the outcome and focus the product around it.
Keep deterministic functions deterministic and add probabilistic systems only where they create value.
Use real delivery to learn what should be strengthened, simplified or removed next.
The historical narrative is grounded in the published history of William Withering and digitalis. For a concise medical history, see the Royal College of Physicians account archived by PubMed Central.
